Family Budget AI

The no-subscription solution: why I built my own family budget app.

No-subscription budget tracker for families.

I was stuck between pretty notebooks that I never used and apps that charged me pro subscriptions. So I created a tool that works for real families.

As a mum of two, trying to track my family's spending has been a real task. I've tried through the countless notebooks and apps. I usually delete the apps almost immediately because of the constant ads or pro upgrades.

Honestly, the irony wasn't lost on me. I was searching for a tracker just to get a handle on all the tiny subscriptions draining my account. I wanted to know exactly what was coming out and when, because even a £1.59 Google charge adds up when you aren't looking.

That was the light-bulb moment. I stopped looking for the perfect budget tracker and decided to build one around how our family actually manages money. That was the birth of Family Budget AI, designed specifically to suit our family's needs and track our spending.

As I started using it, I kept adding new sections. But once the novelty of a new tool wore off, just like it did with those pretty notebooks now hidden away in my drawers, reality set in. I was in the bustle of busy family life. Did I really have the time to manually input a receipt from Aldi after the school run while trying to get dinner on the table? No, I didn't.

That's when I realised that if I could just scan my receipts and let the app handle the data entry, life would be much easier. I added a receipt scanning feature to input and automate the expense into the correct sections, with the option to add your own API key if you're into the tech side of things.

Over a few months, I kept tweaking it until it fit our lives perfectly. Then I took it a step further with a Plan Ahead feature. It uses AI to predict different scenarios: if my income increases or I get a bonus, I can see if we can afford a family day out. If income drops, it shows me exactly how much I need to cut back daily to ensure the bills are met. It's an incredibly handy tool.

After showing off my accomplishment to my nearest and dearest, I started tweaking the app to suit their needs too. After receiving positive feedback, I thought: why not put this out there for everyone?

After comparing my app with other similar ones, I noticed they all relied on monthly subscriptions or free plans with in-app purchases. I realised the ones who truly need to budget are people like myself, who dislike upselling, hidden fees, and monthly subscriptions. We live in a time where even printers have subscriptions. What is that about?

After building this app myself, I finally understand why companies charge so much. It isn't an overnight job. It takes a massive amount of time and effort to get every detail right, especially when you throw in work and kids. But I was adamant I was going to complete this app.

With that said, I stayed true to my original mindset: this should be affordable. I've set it as a one-off lifetime purchase. No upselling, no in-app purchases, and absolutely no ads. Even Netflix has ads now.

With Family Budget AI, you can track your household in peace. If you like it, your partner can even sync their app with yours so you can track and scan receipts together. It also comes with many languages and currency features, so no matter where you are in the world, you can easily adapt it to suit your needs.

I hope it brings your family the same clarity it brought mine.
